Abu Simbal – Lake Nasser, Egypt – Daily Photo

Relocated due to the Aswan Dam, the Abu Simbel statues are huge and impressive

This is the famous Abu Simbel, built by Rameses II. It was built into the mountain face near Lake Nasser and was relocated above when the Aswan Dam was installed. It is a tourist haven because it requires transportation from Aswan to get here and many tourists opt not to do it. It is completely reassembled, however, and you can see a castle-like structure inside the gates. I took quite a few pictures in front of the seated statues as their appearance here is deceiving. They are easily 50 feet tall. When we were there, the temperature was over 100 F and all the tourists were jammed inside or under a solitary tree. Bring lots of water.

I like to think that at night they get up and walk around…
