Mzungo – Swahili – Person of European decent, white person. Literally translated it means “someone who roams around aimlessly”.
I love this photo by Mary Fields my friend and fellow traveler on a trip to Tanzania. I am sitting in a room full of Tanzanian kids obviously, but these kids are the reason I was in Africa. My church had made contact with a church on the slopes of Kilimanjaro near Moshi to help them in their mission of caring for orphans of AIDS. At the time we went there they had around 130 kids (now much much higher) and we started helping provide school uniforms so that they could go to school. Many of these kids will themselves have already been exposed to HIV through their mothers. This for me is the face of AIDS in Africa.
